Ausgrid's network data sits across two critical systems - a Geographic Information System capturing the physical, spatial location and detail of assets, and an asset management system used for financial and planning purposes across the entire organisation. Both systems hold complementary but different views of the same physical assets. GIS has location-based detail but lacks the full attribute depth of the asset management system. The asset system has hundreds of attributes but lacks detailed spatial data. Maintenance and replacement decisions depend on both. Without a unified view, generating accurate, timely insights was extremely difficult. An earlier solution built in 2020 attempted to bridge this gap but struggled to scale, lacked transparency, and relied heavily on manual processes - meaning the model could only be recalculated once annually, requiring months of preparation.
